MEMORABLE PEOPLE & HOSPITALITY EVENTS
In August of 1998 - on or around the 17th - a small group of people from the South African Hospitality Industry Gathered to Celebrate Billy Gallagher's 50ieth Birthday. The even was held at 33 High Street Restaurant in Modderfontein under the Chef-man-ship of Martin Kobald.
50 Years old - that seemed so Old back then!
I first met Billy Gallagher in 1993 sporting a Blue Eye. That meeting was a job interview and he grilled me on my work experience and personality in his completely disarming way, for about 10 minutes, all but ignoring the shiner – which I believed had ended all chances of working for the Head Office of South Africa’s Premier hotel Group. When he eventually asked I blurted out a falsehood about a girl opening a car door into my eye on a dark evening, instead of admitting that the eye got punched during a sparing session at Stan Schmidt’s Karate Dojo. Five minutes later our interview was over and as I reach the door of his 5 star Director’s Office he shared the first of many valuable lessons that I have been blessed to from the great mentor and giant of the Chef World:
“Remember one thing Son, Never Bullshit a Bullshitter…”

The slideshow below are a few selections of my deep well of pictures taken during events and activities working with this incredible icon - Billy Gallagher. He was a man who always thought of the future and brought ideas from there into the present. He and the brigades of Chefs, teams from within Southern Sun / Tsogo Sun Hotels and the South African Chefs Association have brought some incredible concepts to life. The first slide show shows pictures from a series of culinary events called the BOSCHENDAL FOOD & HOME GOURMET SEASON. Six events held in 1997 and 1998 at unique destinations with food prepared by teamed members of the SA ACADEMY OF CHEFS, paired with delightful Boschendal Wines.
